Where is Guilin?

Guilin is a prefecture-level city in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of far southern China, sitting on the west bank of the Li River. Its name means "forest of Sweet Osmanthus", owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city.

Highlights of Guilin

Reed Flute Cave

As the largest and most impressive cave in Guilin, Reed Flute Cave is regarded as the Palace of Nature’s Art.Reed Flute Cave is famous for the marvelous spectacles formed by stalagmites, stalactites, stone columns, stone curtains and stone flowers. From the past to now, it attracts lots of famous people (including lots of presidents and officers) and all of them give high praise of the fantastic scenery. The cave is over 240 meters deep and 500 meters long. In the cave, under the function of different lighting facilities, those colorful and imposing stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains and stone flowers look more beautiful.

Elephant Trunk Hill

As the symbol of Guilin city, the elephant trunk hill lies on the conjunction of the Li River and the peach blossom river.The Elephant Trunk Hill seems like a big elephant watering at the river. In the hill, there are several tens of caves. Of them, the Elephant Trunk Cave and Elephant Eye Cave are more interesting. Maybe, you have guessed that the former one lies on the elephant trunk and the latter one should be at the location of an elephant's eye. If you go to the Elephant Trunk Hill, the Elephant Trunk Cave should be visited especially. It's an ideal place for enjoying the cool in summer and appreciating the river scenery.

Li River

The Li River Scenery is the most picturesque and largest Karst scenic area in the world. Originated in Mao'er Mountain in Xing'an County, the Li River passes through Guilin, Yanshuo and Pingle County. Its course of 83 kilometers from Guilin to Yangshuo is like a green ribbon flanked by numerous verdant hills.The odd peaks standing along the river course reflect on the crystal-clear water, creating a splendid landscape painting. Fields and gardens strew at random on the bank, which brings you the reminiscence of idyllic lifestyle depicted in Ancient Chinese poetries.

From April to December is the best time for Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo. Sitting comfortably on the cruise boat, you will feast your eye on a succession of bewitchingly beautiful scenes of nature, which look like so many canvasses of landscape painting.

Longji Rice Terraces

Longji Rice Terrace is one of the most fantastic scenery in Guilin. It’s located in Longsheng County about 2hours from Guilin city. The altitudes of the terraces differ between 300 meters and 1100meters with the sloping grades between 26degrees and 35 degrees. The steepest slope is 50 degrees. The Terraces were first built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and were completed in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) by the Zhuang people and Yao people.it has been more than 650 years in history. They wind from the foot to the top of mountain, forming a picture of great momentum and imposing beauty. Some look like chains, some others look like ribbons. In each season the land present us a different wonderful landscape.

By Air

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport is located in the Liangjiang Town of Guilin City, about 28 kilometers southwest from the city center, 35km from Guilin Train Station, 92km from Yangshuo County. It opened on October 1st, 1996, and is a modern International Airport newly established in the south of China. It is capable of handling the Boeing 747-200, and was designed to cater for 5,000,000 passengers annually.

By Train

The Guilin Railway Station is located in the south of the city. It has two branches, the North Railway Station and the South Railway Station with 66 arrivals and departures daily. There are trains from Guilin Railway Station to the major cities in China which includes Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Hangzhou.

There are also direct trains from Guilin to Nanning, Beihai, Yulin in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

 

By Bus:

In Guilin, at present, there are two important Bus (coach) Stations, one is the Chief Bus station, and the other one is Qingtan Bus Station. Most buses set off from these two bus stations for surrounding cities in Guangxi, Guangdong and Hunan provinces.

Festivals and Holidays in Guilin

Guilin inhabited about 28 minority group people, such as Zhuang, Hui, Miao, Yao and Dong minority people. Each of them remain their own customs, such as Zhuang people like singing, Miao People are good at embroid and batik, Yaopleople are typical at their coloful clothes while Dong people are famous for their excellent buildings.
