Lugu Lake of Lijiang

Lugu Lake is 200 km from Lijiang and takes six hours by road, which is the fact that decides most trips. It is a plateau lake at 2,690 m on the Yunnan–Sichuan border, home to the Mosuo, and it rewards two nights rather than one — a day trip is not possible, and a single night means eight hours in a car for an afternoon.
The lake, and the people on it
The lake covers about 50 km² at 2,690 m, reaches roughly 90 m deep, and is one of the few large lakes in China without a major city on its shore. Five islands and three peninsulas break the surface, the water is clear enough to see the bottom in the shallows, and the surrounding mountains run to 3,700 m.
The Mosuo live around it in villages on both the Yunnan and Sichuan sides. Their system is matrilineal: property and family name pass through the mother, households are headed by women, and partnerships are formed and ended by consent without a marriage contract — the “walking marriage” that every article about the lake mentions. It is a living arrangement, not a tourist performance, and it is worth reading about before you arrive rather than asking a villager to explain it at dinner.

Lige is where I would stay: two nights, a room facing the water, and the peninsula walk in the morning before the coaches arrive from Lijiang.

The airport at Ninglang opened in 2015 and is the reason a short visit is now possible at all. It has few flights, mostly to Kunming, and they are seasonal — check before building a route around it.
What to do, and what not to
The classic activities are a boat trip in a dugout canoe to one of the islands, a walk or cycle around the shore road, and an evening at a village bonfire. The canoe trips leave from the main piers and are worth doing early, when the water is still and the mountains reflect.
Horse rides along the shore are sold at every turn and are exactly what they look like. The hot springs on the Sichuan side are a half-day detour. What is not worth doing is trying to see the whole lake in a day: the shore road is 60 km with a mountain pass in the middle.
When to come
March to May and September to October: dry, 15 to 22C by day, cold at night, clear water. June to August is the rainy season and the road in is prone to slips. November to February is cold — below freezing at night — and quiet, with some guesthouses shut and the lake at its most still.
Whatever the month, the altitude is 2,690 m: bring a warm layer for the evening even in July, and expect the first night to be restless if you came from sea level that week.
What trips people up
- Treating it as a day trip from Lijiang. Twelve hours in a car for four hours at the lake.
- One night only. The drive eats the afternoon and the morning.
- Expecting a resort. It is a village shoreline with guesthouses, and the plumbing reflects that.
- Asking villagers to explain walking marriage. Read about it first; it is a family system, not an attraction.
- Underestimating the cold at night, at any time of year.

Is Lugu Lake worth the six-hour drive?
For two nights, yes. The lake sits at 2,690 m, the water is clear, and the Mosuo villages around it are a living culture rather than a reconstruction. For one night, no: you would spend twelve hours in a car for an afternoon. The flight to Ninglang airport, 50 km away, is the alternative if the schedule fits.
Can you visit Lugu Lake as a day trip from Lijiang?
No. It is 200 km of mountain road, six to seven hours each way, so a day trip is twelve hours of driving for a few hours at the water. Two nights is the minimum that makes the journey worthwhile, and three lets you circle the lake and visit the Sichuan side.
How do you get to Lugu Lake?
By road from Lijiang via Ninglang, six to seven hours; by air to Ninglang Luguhu airport, opened in 2015, then 50 km by road; or by road from the Sichuan side via Yanyuan. The airport has few flights, mostly to Kunming and often seasonal, so check before building a route around it.
What is walking marriage among the Mosuo?
It is a partnership system rather than a wedding: a woman and a man agree to see each other, the man visits at night and returns to his mother's household in the morning, and any children are raised by the mother's family. Property and family name pass through the female line. It is a family arrangement, not a tourist custom, so read about it before asking.
